Understanding the licensing you need for Power BI and Fabric can easily become overwhelming. Depending on whether you need only Power BI or only Fabric workloads or some combination of both, the recommendation will change. Additionally, prices across regions vary, and individual Power BI licenses may or may not be needed. To help you simplify the process, we have developed the Power BI and Fabric licensing calculator below. Edit inputs based on your needs (for a single capacity) and you’ll see the recommendation. ✨
Keep in mind that this calculator will provide you with a recommendation for a single capacity or individual licenses. With Fabric, you can consider breaking up your workspaces into multiple capacities. For a consultation on a workspace and capacity strategy reach out to us at hello@data-witches.com.
Some important things to keep in mind when thinking about licensing:
- To use Fabric, your organization must have an M365 license.
- Fabric licensing is made up of storage, compute, and user licenses.
- Each Fabric or Power BI workspace is assigned to a single licensing model, whether it’s an F SKU, pro, or PPU. A workspace cannot be assigned to multiple capacities at the same time, but you can change the capacity for the workspace.
- It’s possible to scale up and down your capacity in the Azure portal, but keep in mind there are limits, or quotas, on how much you can scale up.
- Microsoft is unfortunately not offering discounts on F SKUs to Non-Profits 😢. This differs from past Power BI Premium SKUs. Discounts still exist for Power BI Pro and Premium per User (PPU).
- To put a safety net around Copilot capacity consumption, you can also purchase a capacity that will be dedicated to Copilot and can be assigned to users rather than workspaces.
- Microsoft has also developed an official Fabric capacity estimator. If you’re not sure about how big of an F SKU you need, use that first and then input the corresponding CU amount, which you can find on the third page of the calculator.
